David de Gea has come in for criticism for his form (Picture: Getty) Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has hit back at Roy Keane’s claim that David De Gea is ‘overrated’ and says the Spaniard remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
The former Atletico Madrid stopper has come in for fierce criticism this term following a string of uncharacteristic mistakes against the likes of Watford , Everton , Crystal Palace and Tottenham.
De Gea won four out of five Matt Busby Player of the Year awards between 2013 and 2018 and the Spaniard has been United’s most impressive performer since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirment.
However, despite De Gea’s form over the years, Keane labelled the Spain international as the ‘ most overrated goalkeeper I’ve seen in a long time ’ following his mistake against Spurs in June.
Giggs, though, says De Gea remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world and he says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should stick with the Spaniard.
Giggs insists De Gea is still one of the best in the world (Picture: DAZN) ‘I don’t see David’s decline as big as what people have been making out,’ Giggs told Premier League Productions. ‘I think he’s still a top goalkeeper. I think the introduction of Alisson and Ederson as well as the form of Man City and Liverpool hasn’t helped him but he’s a top goalkeeper. ‘I’ve played with him and I’ve coached him, he’s a brilliant goalkeeper but he has made a few more mistakes than he has done in the previous five or six years.
Keane described De Gea as ‘overrated (Picture: SkySports) ‘I think he’s had a very unsettled defence in front of him and that hasn’t helped him; that wouldn’t help any goalkeeper no matter how good you are. ‘He’s a top, top goalkeeper. When you start messing about in the goalkeeper position as we found out when Peter [Schmeichel] left it can be tricky. I don’t think he’s at a stage where you need to think about changing him.

United have youngster Dean Henderson putting pressure on De Gea, with the England U21 ace enjoying a fine season on loan at Sheffield United.
Solskjaer believes Henderson will become United and England first choice in the future but Giggs says he’s not ready to replace De Gea just yet.
‘It is a tough,’continued Giggs. ‘Dean Henderson has had a fantastic season so you can understand the conversation being had but De Gea is still one of the best in the world. Henderson is still on his way up. He looks a fantastic prospect and he’s had a good season. He’s got a decision to make next year.’
